Brazilian jiu jitsu

Welcome to Blue Wave Martial Arts - the home of Brazilian Jiu jitsu in Suffolk.

We are the oldest established Brazilian Jiu Jitsu club in Suffolk starting in 2004. We provide a safe, welcoming and professional training environment for Adults and Children.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was made famous in the 1990s when the Gracie Family showed its effectiveness defeating practitioners from other martial arts in the first UFC and Pride events. It is a submission grappling art that emphasises the use of technique and leverage to overcome an opponent. We offer sessions in the Gi (with the suit) or NoGi (without the suit).

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a physically and mentally challenging but rewarding sport. Whether your goal is to train for competition, self defence, learn something new or simply improve your fitness - our experienced and friendly team of Coaches are here to help you learn, progress and enjoy yourself!

Our classes are beginner friendly and you will receive a full induction and answers to any questions you may have. We regularly host a 6 week Beginner’s Course, get in touch or click here to find out when the next one is.

Beginner’s Course

A 6-week introductory course to the concepts, positions, basics and history of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. This course provides a great foundation for complete beginner’s on which to build your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu skills. We recommend this class for anyone who’s been training less than 6 months and is a one stripe white belt or less. We run the course every 8-10 weeks and offer a generous discount for existing members. Make sure you’re following our Evenbrite page to be notified of our courses.

BeginneR’s CLASS

We have two a special weekly class for Beginner’s (schedule here), this way you don’t have to commit to a course if you don’t want too, work shifts, or can’t come to every class in the course and that puts you off. You will find a warm welcome from existing members and other beginner’s. Beginner’s sessions are NoGi so a great place to start if you want to start Brazilian Jiu Jitsu but are concerned about jumping into a Fundamentals class. Book your trial class.

Basics

Basics Classes focus on excellent technique and movements needed to advance in the sport. Many players, in our opinion, don’t focus enough on the basics. Instead choosing to learn the new internet technique but still can’t escape side control. This is an excellent choice of class for any beginners or any players want to go ‘back to basics’ and master the game from the ground up.

Fundamentals

An All-Levels class that consists of a warm-up, technical instruction, drilling and rolling. The class will cover key fundamentals for Jiu Jitsu players and is suitable for all levels of practitioner. Blue Wave recommends newcomers join the Beginners Course as soon as they can which are run every 8-10 weeks or so.

Competition

This class has a high pace and you can expect an excellent work out and to put your technique in a live environment. Ideal for players aiming to compete and/or stress test their Jiu Jitsu or for any player wanting to roll with more intensity than in other classes. Comp class is a higher pace of workout than Fundamentals and is not suitable for beginners.

Over 40’s

We recognise that older students have a different challenge. This class focusses heavily on good technique for older grapplers. This class will help you learn how to survive on the mat against bigger, stronger and more athletic students. A critical part of the older grapplers game is to survive and frustrate younger, stronger, faster opponents and play patiently until it’s time to return the attack. We encourage class members to attend other classes on the schedule. This class is suitable for beginners and higher belts.

Open Mat

A session for rolling / sparring / drilling. This can be a challenge for beginner’s but an excellent way to learn guard retention against better players but also to learn how to translate what you learn in class into a live environment. We are proud to have a high number of colour belts at Blue Wave and we are all on the mat to learn and help each other. Higher Belts can expect a challenge from each other and we encourage you to be clear about the level of intensity you want to roll at with other players.
